qualities of effectiveness and fruitfulness. 7.11.13

"For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." -2 Peter 1:5-8 ESV

Like an olympic athlete who works day in and day out to make the most of his abilities and talents, so we as Christians must take our gift of faith and cultivate our lives to grow in effectiveness and fruitfulness. We do this by…supplementing our faith with virtue-a moral excellence that acknowledges there is divine truth and true way of living. By…growing in knowledge of God-an ever increasing wisdom that sees God’s detailed presence and unique purposes in the world. Through…Self-control and steadfastness which is needed to proceed in a definitive direction over time. Growing in Godliness…that our character would refine looking more and more like that Christ. Through brotherly affection and love, knowing life can’t effectively and peacefully grow and advance if lived with elbows out…protecting and defending rather than selflessly giving and investing. Action. My sons, if these qualities are yours and daily increasing, they will keep you from living an ineffective and unfruitful life. Instead you will be a wise man, experiencing an ever expanding horizon of resources and opportunities to grow in your faithfulness and knowledge of God.
