Why is contentment a secret? 5.20.13

"Christian contentment is that sweet, inward, quiet, gracious frame of spirit, which freely submits to and delights in God’s wise and fatherly disposal in every condition." Burroughs, The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment.

Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. (Philippians 4:11, 12 NLT)

As discussed in the book Margin, contentment is a secret for there is no formula that exists for finding it other than obedience. One must first seek it and only then will it be revealed. For the worldly mind it makes no sense and no amount of scientific study will ever uncover the secret and its source. Action. My sons, listen close…the secret to the endless riches and blessing of contentment is this; you must want it. Only when you truly desire it will you daily fight through seasons of plenty and want to lay hold of it. The existence of tension here is healthy and gives great evidence of the forging of our soul into Christlikeness. Contentment is cultivated daily by learning to talk to yourself in a good Christian way moment by moment replacing error with truth. The blessed man desires and pursues contentment as life’s priceless treasure, daily strive to be this man in life.
