Who sleeps well? 4.25.11

People who work hard sleep well, whether they eat little or much. But the rich seldom get a good night’s sleep. – Ecclesiastes 5:12

This verse is great in that speaks to the tensions that exist between busyness and idleness, hard work and laziness, as well as rich and poor. There is the tendency of our flesh to long for comfort and ease, telling ourselves if it is all so meaningless in the end…why take on more responsibilities in life if all they bring is added stress and anxiety, ruining a good nights sleep. So what we get is the easy comfortable life complex, burying all our talents in the ground due to laziness. On the other hand we can become so addicted to the results of hard work that we worry and fret, seldom getting a good night sleep. Solomon’s wisdom is great…saying a good night’s sleep has nothing to do with being rich or poor, but instead is the sweet reward of the diligent, hard working man. A good night sleep being symbolic of a healthy soul: the sweet, blessed life of rest. The men that put forth much faithful action, end each day exhausted from stewarding life’s responsibilities well…too tired not to sleep well. Action. My sons, live a life that exemplifies true freedom finding that sweet balance of work and rest; working hard in life so that you can be trusted fully with many important responsibilities, yet also enjoying rest…sleeping well and trusting God’s sovereignty in the results. Remember always that the horse is diligently prepared for battle, but your victory lies with the Lord.
