Wisdom for my Sons

More blessed to give than receive. 1.16.11 & 3.30.12

From Evernote:

More blessed to give than receive. 1.16.11 & 3.30.12

The world of the generous gets larger and larger; the world of the stingy gets smaller and smaller.

The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed; those who help others are helped.

Proverbs 11:24,25

These verses always are so unique in they touch on the effects of a generous heart. When I think stingy…I picture Mr. Scrooge a cursed man…alone, fearful, skeptical of all…a mans whose world has shrunk to the point in which it is only him. On the other hand, when I think generous…I picture a blessed man…surrounded by friends, unafraid of loss, loving to all…experiencing an ever expanding world of blessing. The principle is found, whether we believe it or not, in the truth that God has wired us to give and to be most joyful when generous will all things. If that is true, why do we spend most of the day worrying about receiving rather than focusing on giving…when selfishly that is when we are most blessed. Action. My sons, decide to be a generous man with all your resources in life, the world will race ahead telling you are missing out on the good life…but it is a lie…hold fast to the truth, the good blessed life is found in giving, more than receiving.

You are known by the company you keep. 3.29.11 & 3.29.12

From Evernote:

You are known by the company you keep. 3.29.11 & 3.29.12

"Hence companionship with the wise and energetic never fails to have a most valuable influence on the formation of character-increasing our resources, strengthening our resolves, elevating our aims, and enabling us to exercise greater dexterity and ability in our own affairs, as well as more effective helpfulness of others." -Character by Samuel Smiles

A wise man does well to seek out the good company of others. Knowing good or bad we are influenced by those closest to us….whether we like it or not. The wise man knows this truth and thus desires to associate and surround himself with other men of good character. The advancing man…one who is hungry to develop his character and grow in wisdom will seek spending time with those more advanced than him, knowing that is the only way of getting better. Action. My sons, be the man that never stops growing in character and wisdom…impact and influence in life are a by product of this life long pursuit. Seek out and spend time with great, godly men…learn from them study their habits and how they think. For who you become as a man in life will mirror those you most closely associate with.

Todays habits define tomorrow. 2.10.11 & 3.28.12

From Evernote:

Todays habits define tomorrow. 2.10.11 & 3.28.12

"you cannot be tomorrow, what you do not do today." John Maxwell

Dreams and visions for a preferred future are as common to mankind as the air we breathe. Yet the fact that they are there can deceive one into thinking they are well on their way to becoming a reality. The rolling tomorrow is common to man, each telling themselves tomorrow will be different, while each passing day further hardens the cement of their unintended future. The rarity in life is the man who takes a God given desire or passion, breaks it down and begins taking daily steps in that preferred direction. Each day, day after day, staying the course…weathering good and bads, pleasant circumstances and not so pleasant circumstances…knowing that all he can control is his actions today…and a lot of today’s when added together amount to a lot. Action. My sons, the man you will become will be determined by your daily agenda…cultivate and master your daily habits…contentment, satisfaction, joy, and blessings are found in the mastery of today. Master today and you will be a man who properly leads family and others into a preferred God honoring future.

What goes around comes around. 3.27.12

From Evernote:

What goes around comes around. 3.27.12

Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant. (Galatians 6:7 NLT)

Don’t be misled: No one makes a fool of God. What a person plants, he will harvest. The person who plants selfishness, ignoring the needs of others-ignoring God! – harvests a crop of weeds. All he’ll have to show for his life is weeds! But the one who plants in response to God, letting God’s Spirit do the growth work in him, harvests a crop of real life, eternal life. (Galatians 6:7, 8 MSG)

The world sees it as "what goes around comes around", yet as children of God we see God’s mysterious design of justice govering the world. The principle of sowing and reaping is not some arbitrary idea but instead a divinely designed law that governs His creation…like gravity. One can only fathom the depths of God’s wisdom behind it, but this law serves as just one of the many ways God governs and maintains justice. Quite simple really, sow selfishness reap a life of weeds…sow in response to God and reap real, eternal life. Action. My sons, you are hard wired to pursue joy in life, it is your divine longing for real, abundant, eternal life. Don’t be decieved… it is found not in getting but in giving, sowing the very things you long to reap. If you long to be encouraged try encouraging another person first, if desire joy bring a ray of hope to another, so on and so forth. This is not wishful thinking but a divine law created by God to governing His creation…for He is good and just, seeing that that what one reaps he will in time sow…in a world where what goes around comes around.

Actions are the visible fruit of the heart. 12.7.10 & 3.26.12

From Evernote:

Actions are the visible fruit of the heart. 12.7.10 & 3.26.12

Young people eventually reveal by their actions

if their motives are on the up and up.

Drinking from the Chalice of Knowledge. Proverbs 20:11

Motives are always hard to understand and judge. The greatest evidence of the heart condition and thought-life is a persons actions…for they are the exact fruit of the seeds of thought that have been planted over time. Much like the expression, ‘what is done in private will eventually be shouted on roof tops’…what is done in the privacy of our minds we think is hidden, but in reality is showing itself daily in our actions for the whole world to see. Action. My sons, talking is easy…give little weight to a persons words, but instead wait patiently for their actions to reveal the direction of their heart. Desire to be a man who displays an obedient heart by your actions…knowing they are tied directly to obedient thoughts.

Blessings of a humble servant. 11.9.10 & 3.23.12

From Evernote:

Blessings of a humble servant. 11.9.10 & 3.23.12

Don’t work yourself into the spotlight;

don’t push your way into the place of prominence.

It’s better to be promoted to a place of honor

than face humiliation by being demoted. Proverbs 25: 5-6

Trust In Gods perfect timing, when it comes to being honored or promoted to a higher position in any area in life. Everyones desires an honored position…and the world would rather have the position of honor, then cultivating the character that is worthy of such a position. Prominence and honor received before a person is ready for it, will prove to be more of a curse then a blessing. The goal of a man is to cultivate a sweet humble heart of a servant, esteeming the needs of others as greater then his one. In right time, God may choose to lift up and honor that person or He may not…for he knows the treasure and blessing is not in the honor, but in the heart condition. Action. My sons, It is more blessed to give then receive…be a man who lives a simple life daily being faithful to his calling…desiring the satisfaction and approval of God as more important than approval of man.

The rest of meekness. 2.22.11 & 3.22.12

From Evernote:

The rest of meekness. 2.22.11 & 3.22.12

"Jesus calls us to rest and meekness is His method. The meek man cares not at all who is greater than he, for he has long ago decided that esteem of the world is not worth the effort." -AW Tozer

Meekness is a rare character trait that is hard to understand. The term alone invokes flinches of weakness…yet is God’s means of us experiencing rest. I wonder, would I even recognize this Godly trait in others if it was being displayed…do I even know what to look for? Being meek of spirit has nothing to do with being weak, but instead shows a man free from the prideful pull of life. A perfectly meek man has zero desire to be esteemed in the eyes of others, because he realizes that pride is insatiable and not worth the energy or effort. He knows the bar the world uses in esteeming others is a sliding scale, like the dangling carrot, always hanging just out of reach. Action. My sons, blessed and free is the man who sees through the pride of life and realizes that the esteem of the world is not worth the effort. Everyday and in every encounter strive to minimize self and elevate and shine light on others.

Look at a person’s wake in life. 3.21.12

From Evernote:

Look at a person’s wake in life. 3.21.12

If you are wise and understand God’s ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying. For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind.

But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness. (James 3:13-18 NLT)

Being a good judge of character is a huge asset in a man’s life. Whether personally or professinally, the ability to understand a person’s motives and heart being key to relationships. So how does a wise man begin to assess people and their character…when their own heart is blinded by sin as well? Like a business, the data doesn’t lie…always look at the wake of an individual’s life. As they go about their everyday life, is their world of relationships characterized by peace and humility; meaning they seem exist peacefully with others…or is their wake full of broken relationships; always seeming to be surrounded by discord and conflict. A man will always be an influencer of his environment. Godly wisdom being evidenced by peace and unity…earthly wisdom being evidenced by conflict and discord. One comes from a pure humble heart, one comes from a prideful wicked heart. Action. My sons, our heart default is always to pride. When will you notice it? Discord and conflict will become more and more evident in your life. As a man, in life always run hard after godly wisdom which is rooted in an authentic humble heart. You must pursue it, working hard at it…for your heart, if left uncultivated will always default to it’s sinful state.

Mockers and Know-it-alls. 3.20.12

From Evernote:

Mockers and Know-it-alls. 3.20.12

Mockers hate to be corrected,

so they stay away from the wise. (Proverbs 15:12 NLT)

Know-it-alls don’t like being told what to do; they avoid the company of wise men and women. (Proverbs 15:12 MSG)

Mockers and Know-it-alls lives are characterized by always abstaining from good, wise company in life. The arrogant attitude of their heart forever keeping them from being around others who challenge and foster growth. Guys like this are easy to spot, for they are always alone…going about daily life without any sense of need for others. Their messages of contempt are not always blatant, many times masking a know-it-all spirit with; I’m too busy…I have more important things to do… other’s successes offend me…and many more; all functional wedges driving the man away from good, wise company. Action. My sons, in life find the best, wisest, "so much more advanced than you" type people and surround yourself with them, seek them out, understand how they think, welcoming their challenges and critique. For this man is blessed, for he has is no ceiling in life…forever growing, because of his heart for wisdom. For the mocker and know-it-all life is cursed, permanently and forever capped in it’s current state…in capable of future growth.

Litmus test of heart. 3.19.12

From Evernote:

Litmus test of heart. 3.19.12

When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! (Galatians 5:19-23 NLT)

How can one tell if they are living in the Spirit? The verse above clearing showing that the outflowing of the attitude of our heart will very clearly identify whether we are being led by the Spirit or the flesh. How convicting… I am coming to realize that I am the common element in both. In life when I feel like dissension is every where around me, people are frustrating, personal goals aren’t aligning, impurity of thought, etc…I am the common the element in all of these. I realize it is not others…by my heart that is the problem; being led by the flesh. Same goes for seasons of blessing…when people seem to be getting along, being patient with others, seeking advancement of others, honorable and pure thought life…my heart is the common theme. Action. My sons, it is so easy to blame surrounding circumstances for our attitudes and heart condition….I realize more and more that the events and circumstances really don’t change that much but it is instead how we experience and interpret them in the fluctuating condition of our heart. We are always the common denominator in the attitude conditions listed in the verses above.
